ATTORNEY BACKGROUND

Dennis Mestas is the founder of the firm and has been practicing in Alaska for over 32 years. Dennis has successfully handled hundreds of plaintiff’s personal injury, wrongful death, and insurance cases. His career is distinguished by more than 30 cases in which multi-million trial verdicts or settlements have been obtained, including a jury trial judgment of $6,122,000 and jury trial verdicts of $6,500,000; and $2,500,000. His many cases have included automobile, trucking, aircraft, ATV, maritime, automobile and product defect injuries and deaths as well as industrial, construction, oilfield, electricity, mining, and toxic chemical injuries and deaths. Aircraft death and injury cases that Dennis has handled have included the following types of aircraft: PA-18, Cessna 170-B, Cessna 185, Cessna 207, Cherokee Six, DeHavilland Beaver, Magnum Beaver, DC-10, 205-A-1 Helicopter, and Hughes 500 Helicopter. Dennis is also recognized as one the leading attorneys in Alaska in relation to handling insurance bad faith cases against automobile insurers and health insurers for wrongfully denying insurance claims, concealing coverages and claims, unreasonably delaying payment, or unreasonably failing to offer policy limits. He has represented 28 deceived insureds who have obtained compensation ranging from $300,000 to $10,000,000. See Verdict and Settlements.

Originally hailing from the mountains of northwestern Colorado, Dennis came to Anchorage in 1974 after graduating from the University of Colorado Law School in Boulder. From 1975 to 1978, during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline, he practiced with a major law firm in Anchorage and was responsible for handling a wide variety of personal injury, wrongful death, and insurance cases on behalf of union workers injured or killed during that project. Dennis also represented the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association and Anchorage Firefighters Employees Association and numerous members who were injured or killed. In 1978, Dennis started a law firm in Anchorage focused on personal injury, wrongful death, and insurance cases.
He has been a member of the Alaska Bar Association since 1975, and he is admitted to practice in both the State and Federal courts of Alaska. Dennis is one of the founding members of the Alaska Academy of Trial Lawyers and was one of its first Presidents. He has long been a member of several national trial lawyer organizations. He has represented clients in cases all over Alaska.

Dennis has been asked to lecture on numerous occasions to local attorneys, as well as to the Oregon Trial Attorneys Association, on insurance coverages, insurance policy interpretation, and on the duties of insurers in Alaska to properly investigate, properly disclose, and timely handle insurance coverages and claims.
Dennis is a lifetime fisherman, hunter, and skier. Soon after arriving in Alaska he obtained a private pilot’s license and has owned and operated several light aircraft equipped with wheels, floats, and skis. Dennis is married and has three adult children.
